The internet has convinced runners that a 22-minute 5K is "okay" and a 30-minute 5K is embarrassing. Real race data says the opposite. The people actually showing up to 5Ks — millions of them — are far slower than the times runners brag about online.

The real average 5K time
The best public dataset on this is RunRepeat's analysis of US 5K races, built with the IAAF from race results spanning 2009-2018. Per their US 5K statistics, the average 5K finish time is 39:02.
Not 25 minutes. Not 30. Thirty-nine minutes.

Two caveats, so you read this honestly. First, this is race-finisher data — it includes walkers, stroller-pushers, and charity-day first-timers, which pulls the average up. Second, the same dataset shows the average slowed over its decade: from 34:02 in 2009 to 39:02, as 5Ks got more popular and less competitive. That's not runners getting worse. That's more people getting off the couch — which is the entire point of the 5K.
Scale check: the same source counts about 2.6 million annual 5K race participants in the US, and 61.2% of them are women. The 5K is the biggest shared start line in running.

Notice two things. The drop-off with age is gentler than you'd fear — men in their 50s average only about three minutes slower than men in their 20s. And the under-20 numbers are the fastest mostly because that bracket is full of school runners who train.
So if you're 45 and running 33 minutes, you are not "slow for your age." You're beating your bracket's average by well over two minutes.
The other end: world records
Averages need an anchor on the fast end, so here's the ceiling of human 5K performance — all from World Athletics.
On the track, the men's 5000m world record is 12:35.36, run by Joshua Cheptegei in Monaco in 2020 and ratified by World Athletics. That's 2:31 per kilometer. His race report describes metronomic 61-second laps — for over twelve laps.
