Two water bottles. Both say “500 ml.” One app tells you that’s 16.9 oz. Another tells you it’s 17.6 oz. Neither app is broken.
They’re just using two different ounces, and almost nobody explains that. Here’s the full ml to oz breakdown, done correctly, both ways.
The two ounces, defined
There isn’t one “fluid ounce.” There are two in common use, and they’re not the same size:
- US fluid ounce = 29.57 ml
- UK (imperial) fluid ounce = 28.41 ml
The UK ounce is smaller, which means the same volume of water converts to a bigger number of UK ounces than US ounces. A US fluid ounce and a UK fluid ounce are off by more than a milliliter each, and that gap compounds fast once you’re talking about a full day’s intake.
Why this trips up nearly every water app
Most hydration apps pick one ounce definition, usually US, and never say so. If you’re in the UK, or you’ve set your phone to imperial units expecting the imperial ounce, the numbers you see are quietly wrong for your unit, even though the app is technically doing correct math. A 2000 ml goal reads as 68 US oz or 70.4 UK oz. That’s not rounding noise, it’s a nearly two-and-a-half ounce gap on a single goal, and it grows the bigger your target gets.

oz to ml: the trap, made visible
This is the table that actually shows the problem. Take a single “oz” amount and convert it as if it were US, then again as if it were UK. The gap is the entire trap.

At 8 oz, the gap is small enough to ignore. At a full daily goal of 128 oz, “which ounce did you mean” is worth almost 150 ml, roughly two-thirds of a standard glass. That’s the whole reason a single unlabeled “oz” number on a bottle or an app screen isn’t actually a complete answer.
Pints and gallons, while we’re at it
The ounce trap gets worse once you go up a size, because pints and gallons aren’t scaled the same way in each system either.

Notice a US pint isn’t just “a pint measured in a different ounce”, it’s genuinely a different volume, because the UK pint is defined as 20 of its own ounces, not 16. A UK pint is meaningfully bigger than a US pint, on top of the ounce itself being smaller. Two unit differences stacked on each other, in opposite directions.

How to use this without doing math every day
You don’t need to memorize any of this. Pick one unit, US oz, UK oz, or plain ml, and stick to it for every bottle, every app setting, and every goal you set. The trap isn’t using US or UK ounces, it’s switching between them without noticing, which is exactly what happens when you read one label in oz and another in ml and mentally treat them as the same currency.
